Lots of fans got fed up with Broly’s endless hype, and they argued–not unfairly– that Broly was overrated, and his movies sucked. There was an inevitable backlash, of course. I can only imagine how sixth graders reacted to this dude. I was in my 20′s when I got into this stuff. Years later, I was watching a TFSGaming video, and Kierran was telling this story about how his childhood friend told him that Broly fought like four Super Saiyan 4′s at the same time, and that was how crazy strong he was.
For my part, I only knew that he was this jacked up evil Super Saiyan, and fanboys thought he could beat anyone.

The few people who had seen Movie 8 would talk about it to people who hadn’t, and the detail would inevitably get all confused, and this would add to Broly’s legend. So what you had in the early 2000′s was a perfect storm for fan rumors. From what I understand, Broly was a secret boss in Legacy of Goku II, which came out a couple of months before the DVD, although I’m not sure how many gamers actually found the guy. For some reason it took Funimation like four years to get the last five movies out, though. I never bought theconvention fansubs myself, because I wasn’t interested enough in DBZ to do that, and I figured the movies would be released in stores soon enough. Also they kept showing a big blue orb heading their way, and the bad guy was this huge maniac.Īnd in those years, I think that was the only way to get your Broly fix in this part of the world. I remember watching part of it, maybe the scene where everyone shares their energy with Goku near the end, and I couldnt figure out where the Z-Fighters were, because the whole planet looked barren and nondescript. Sometimes it was Kid Trunks talking to Tapion, sometimes it was Janemba, sometimes Hatchiyack, and sometimes it was Movie 8. I’d walk by and notice DBZ playing, but the footage was strange and unfamiliar. Before that, I had seen bootleg fansubs of the later movies being screened at dealer booths at comic book conventions. I remember already being aware of the character, and looking forward to finally seeing what the guy’s deal was. I think Movie 8 came out on DVD a few months later. I don’t want to spend too much time talking about the Broly phenomenon, but just to give you an idea of the state of the fandom in 2003, DBZ’s final episode had aired on Cartoon Network in April. The villain’s identity is kept a secret for about half of the film, although there aren’t many suspects, and Broly was already known to western audiences before the movie was released in the U.S.
The original title was “Burn Up!! Hot Fight, Fierce Fight, Super Violent Fight.” I point this out because the Funimation title may be more specific about the subject, but it also spoils the movie. The first Broly movie premiered on March 6, 1993, between episodes 176 and 177.
